Former students of St. Leo fight to keep their history alive 50 years after the 105 Freeway paved over the school and church.
In the fall of 1972, St. Leo’s school in Watts, Los Angeles did not open its doors for the new school year. The predominantly Black Catholic school and its adjoining church sat directly in the path of the soon-to-be constructed 105 Freeway. It was a tight-knit community that was soon scattered. More than 50 years after the closure of their school, St. Leo’s students work to keep their community memory alive. In telling the story of the school, this film will ask audiences to think critically about the ways we remember places, what we choose to remember at all, and how - if at all - we can pass those memories on.
